California Excise Tax 15%
When folks voted yes for Prop 64, which made cannabis legal for adult use, they approved a 15% excise tax for all cannabis products, regardless of medical or recreational use. This tax funds the Bureau of Cannabis Control, which regulates the industry.
The 15% is included in the published price of products you see on our site.
California Sales & Use Tax (or local tax)
Like many items you purchase at a retail location, cannabis is a taxable commodity. This tax will be calculated based on your subtotal and displayed on your receipt as a separate line item.
City of Sacramento Cannabis Tax
The City of Sacramento is where our business is located. In addition to the excise and local tax, we are required to collect a 4% cannabis tax that goes directly to the City of Sacramento. This tax is calculated on your subtotal and displayed on your receipt as a separate line item.
Total cannabis tax averages 27.75% for cannabis products. Local tax may vary based on delivery region.
Tax Exemption
If you spend at least $100 or more a month on cannabis products, you may consider applying for a Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC). When you present this card to us, you will be exempt from the Local Tax only.
Below are two useful links to learn more about obtaining an MMIC card.

A pre-requisite to the MMIC is obtaining a medical marijuana recommendation. Greenleaf Care offers on-line recommendations for $29.
